Restaurant Spotlight

If you’re after classic Southern food with a little more range than the usual meat-and-three, Poogan's Southern Kitchen leans into tradition while still keeping the menu interesting. It’s rooted in the same Lowcountry style people expect from the Poogan’s name, but with a broader mix that works just as well for brunch as it does for dinner.

The menu starts strong with Southern staples that feel familiar but dialed up a notch. Fried green tomatoes come topped with pimento cheese and bacon jam, crab hushpuppies bring a coastal touch, and deviled eggs get a boost with hot honey fried chicken. It’s the kind of opening lineup that sets the tone early — rich, a little indulgent, and very much grounded in Southern flavor.

From there, the kitchen covers a lot of ground. You’ve got standout entrées like shrimp and grits with andouille sausage and Tasso gravy, crispy fried chicken served with collards and mac and cheese, and country fried pork chops with sausage gravy. Seafood plays a big role too, with options like fried flounder or buttermilk fried shrimp, alongside dishes that lean a little heavier into comfort, like brisket mac and cheese.

Brunch is just as much a focus here, with plates like chicken and waffles, biscuits loaded with fried chicken and hot honey, and sweeter options like banana pudding pancakes or pecan French toast. Even the simpler dishes — eggs, grits, biscuits — are done in a way that keeps them from feeling like an afterthought.

What stands out most is the variety. You can go all-in on something heavy and classic, keep it lighter with a salad or bowl, or mix and match across the menu depending on the time of day. It’s Southern food at its core — just with enough range to keep you coming back to try something different next time.

Featured Pup of the Week: Zyra 🐶

From Dorchester Paws:

“We’re pretty sure Zyra can hear a treat bag open from three counties away. 👂

This adorable 4-month-old girl had an incredible time in her foster home where she learned all about life outside the shelter. From making dog friends to mastering the joys of squeaky toys and cozy fuzzy blankets, Zyra soaked it all in.

Her foster shared that she’s great with other dogs, does well around people, and has the best playful puppy energy. She worked consistently on potty training and crate training, and she’s already showing how smart and eager to learn she is.

Now that she’s had such a wonderful start, Zyra is officially back at Dorchester Paws ready to find the forever family who will keep helping her grow.💛🐶”
