Restaurant Spotlight

If you’ve spent any time in the Lowcountry, you may have heard the name Bessinger—and for good reason. Joe Bessinger’s BBQ has been a staple in the Charleston area for over 60 years, serving up classic Southern barbecue with a side of local history. This family-run joint is part of the legendary Bessinger lineage, tracing its roots back to Big Joe Bessinger, the man widely credited with inventing South Carolina’s iconic mustard-based barbecue sauce back in the 1930s.

Walking into Joe Bessinger’s, you’ll find all the hallmarks of a great Southern BBQ spot: the comforting aroma of slow-cooked pork, friendly faces behind the counter, and a menu that covers all the bases. Of course, the star of the show here is the pulled pork—tender, smoky, and generously doused in that signature tangy mustard sauce.

But don’t stop at the pork. The menu is deep, with something for everyone in your party. The hand-dipped onion rings are a must-try—crunchy, golden, and so thickly breaded they’re almost hush puppies in disguise. If you’re extra hungry, go for the rice and hash tray. Joe Bessinger’s take on South Carolina hash skips the liver and leans into hearty potatoes and sweet onions, all tied together with that famous mustard sauce.

Families will feel right at home here, and the prices are fair for the generous portions. One reviewer even pointed out that Joe’s is open on Sundays—a rarity in Summerville and a lifesaver when those barbecue cravings hit on a quiet weekend.

A quick rundown of the essentials:

  • Mustard-based BBQ sauce: Legendary and tangy, with just the right amount of sweetness.

  • Pulled pork: The top pick, every time.

  • Hash and rice: Comfort food at its finest.

  • Onion rings: Don’t skip them.

  • Sweet tea: Good, but you might need to ask for a refill if you’re there during the lunch rush.

In a town filled with barbecue options, Joe Bessinger’s stands out for its history, its family-friendly vibe, and—most importantly—its commitment to doing barbecue the right way. Next time you’re in the mood for a true taste of South Carolina tradition, you know where to go!

Featured Pup of the Week: Iago 🐾

Meet Iago, the 1 ½ year old hound mix who has been at Dorchester paws for over almost 2 months now!

From Dorchester Paws:

“Inside his kennel, it’s loud, overwhelming, and lonely. And though he tries to stay brave, the weight of shelter life is heavy on his young heart. But if you met him outside these walls… you’d see the real Iago.

A 1-year-old boy with one mesmerizing blue eye and one brown, Iago is pure sunshine when he’s with his people and his dog friends. He walks like a dream on a leash, soaking up every step with his humans by his side. He’s a total cuddle bug, melting into your lap like he’s finally found peace. His happiest moments are outside, running and playing with other pups. It reminds us that Iago deserves so much more than a kennel.

He deserves a home. A quiet place where he can rest, play, and just be the incredible dog he is. If you can be that person for Iago, even for a little while, you’ll change his world.”
